Green Grants for Gas Heating Scotland — Honest Guide
The Home Energy Scotland heat pump grant prioritises properties not connected to mains gas. If you have mains gas heating, you generally will not qualify for the HES heat pump package. However, other green incentives are still available.
Best Option: 0% VAT Solar
For gas-connected properties, 0% VAT on solar panels (until 31 March 2027) is the most accessible green incentive. Save approximately £700 on a typical 4kWp system with no application required.
What About ECO4?
ECO4 is available to gas-connected properties if you meet the eligibility criteria:
- EPC rating of D to G
- Receiving qualifying benefits (Universal Credit, Pension Credit, ESA, etc.)
If you qualify, ECO4 can fund solar panels, insulation, or other efficiency measures at no cost to you.
What About Heat Pump Payback on Gas?
Honest answer: Without the HES grant, heat pump payback periods are long for gas-connected properties because gas is currently cheaper per kWh than electricity. A heat pump without grant support might take 15-20 years to pay back on gas.
This is why HES prioritises off-gas properties — that's where heat pumps deliver the fastest payback and biggest carbon savings.
